It is time parents start accepting responsibility instead of blaming the youth coach.

There is a great article in the coaching journal from 2015 on winning vs developing and how we need both strategies for success in coaching. However, I want to focus on one aspect that has become a bit too common in the marketplace for youth sports at all ages and competition levels, and that is simply blaming the coach.

It is truly amazing that any sane person wants to coach youth sports, as it is usually a no-win situation. For those, who decide to try youth coaching, prepare yourself for culpability for just about everything – including, global warming, a bad economy, and world poverty. Its been my experience as a youth director and High School Coach going on 2 decades now that like youth officials, the average career of any youth coach is roughly 2 hard years of loving on other peoples children then a year battling the vocal minority and political nature of just about every youth-centered club activity. at best the average is 2-3 years. It has been my experience where it’s much easier for players and particularly parents to blame the coaches and staff on just about every issue than to actually address the familiar and potentially lifelong impact that parents are having on our sports. In many cases, this is a subconscious result similar to Occam’s razor where the easiest to blame is often the first blamed without any degree of critical thinking or introspection. This is only magnified when the coach has his or her own player on the team.

Following are common statements I hear from parents, and sometimes, I hear the exact opposite views said about the same youth coach from parents in even the same household.

  • “My son was not having any fun – it was the coach’s fault, he worked the kids hard but without fun.”
  • “My son was not improving – it was the coach’s fault, the coach made it fun, but knew little of what it takes to help players improve.”
  • “The game was too boring for her – it was the coach’s fault, they stood around a lot and were disengaged.”
  • “My daughter suffered burnout – it was the coaches’ fault, they had too demanding a schedule and exhausted the kids with too much practice and games.”
  • “The team was losing most of the time – it was the coach’s fault, they had talent but the coach did not know how to manage games.”
  • “The team won all the time, but the coach put so much pressure on the players; it was all win, win, and win and my player did not get much time on the field.”
  • “He is a great attackman, but never gets to play attack – it is the coaches’ fault; they play favorites.”
  • “My daughter was cut from the team; it was his coach’s fault, they never taught her to play other positions and she had no versatility.”

I believe it is time parents look in the mirror first before looking for the easy out – the coach.

There will always be perceptual differences of opinion, but parents must have a better outlook to begin with and quit blaming the youth coach for everything. That outlook should begin with this understanding – most coaches are volunteers and well-intentioned people, who have enough of a background in the sport to help kids. They are not experts at bringing out players’ potential, changing player attitudes, and rarely make things as fun as you, or your child, wants them to be. Sure, some youth coaches have personal agendas. However, unless they are obviously abusive types, their actions are not detrimental to players in the end, as long as parents respond sensibly.

When in doubt, blame the youth coach is the dominant mantra by many youth parents and players

First, I have coached youth sports for 16 years now, having worked with thousands of kids. I believe that every player at every level must find what drives them into the sport and a reason to play and while a coach is there to give players tools and resources to that aspect of the player development, this drive and desire, such as effort MUST come from inside the player and not even from the parents. We are all responsible for melding that but to my knowledge, I have never taken the fun out of the game for anyone of them, maybe I am naïve. I also believe that I am an expert at making sport fun and at the very least bringing my energy to the game. However, no matter that, some kids I work with still do not have fun – the sport seems to bore them from the start or not excite them anymore as they get to the high school level. As much as I want things to be fun for all and use my considerable skills, I cannot make it so for some. Nor do I believe being responsible for making it fun is the main coach’s goal. Does that make me a bad coach? I do not believe so. I do believe coaches should never take the fun out of the sport, but that is a big difference from being responsible for making it fun.

The prevailing youth sports coaching sentiment seems to be this – a youth coach’s job is to make things fun for kids as if that is the main coach’s role; and, as long as coaches make it fun and not boring, they are good coaches. In addition, those, who seemingly do not know how to have fun with kids, are not worthy of coaching youth.

Parents automatically blame the coach because their son or daughter says the game was boring or not fun anymore. Could it be the child lost interest for other reasons, as the child was only playing because the parent wanted them in the sport, the child’s personality did not mesh with the sport, or the athlete just was not very good at it? Those are much more likely scenarios. Every one of those reasons is as much the parents’ fault then coaches, but of course, most adults will never blame self or the youth athlete. From my experience, parents are more the reason for kids losing interest than coaches.

There is no denying that there are some bad coaches and youth deserve better than what those coaches provide. In addition, there is a high amount of room for improvement in our society in the area of training youth coaches, but parents must be more objective before taking the easy way out and blaming coaches. Most coaches are caring people, out to help kids, and they do their best.

Parents should understand they are as much responsible for youth athletes’ interest, fun, and development, especially at the lower levels of sport, than coaches are. The bottom line is that if parents want kids to have fun, develop, and not be bored or burnout, then they should do the things to make those happen and quit relying on coaches for them. 

Here are some suggestions for parents before beginning the “blame game” with the youth coach:

  1. Have kids play multiple sports to find which ones fit their character instead of having them play the sport you think they should play or the ones you want them to play
  2. Develop a love of sport at a young age by:
    1. Attending  advanced level games, which have fans and excitement around them – it only takes one event to hook kids, sometimes
    2. Watch the sport on TV
    3. Discuss sports with enthusiasm at home
    4. Play sports with them without inundating them with what to do instructions
    5. Look for the spark in their eye when performing those sports – when kids appear bored playing at home, there is a great chance they will be bored in organized sport
    6. Search out coaches, leagues, programs that are known to have the type of programs that suit children’s personalities and skills (i.e. casual, less competitive play or advanced, more intense play)
    7. Get qualified, outside-the-team coaching – camps, clinics, lessons – for players to improve, when they do not meet their own expectations
    8. Insist local leagues and organizations have certification requirements for coaches, so they have the training they need to provide the necessary coaching skills
    9. Listen to your child’s thoughts, when they face forms of adversity, as in a coach they do not seem to like. Most parents assume they know what kids think or think for their child, instead of getting to the heart of the matter. More often than not, there is a deeper issue, other than the coach, as they have little interest in the sport, or it requires more work than they want to give to the sport. Good parenting suggests parents help kids work through adversity, without allowing them or parents to blame the coach.
    10. For parents, who think they have the answers for better coaching, they should find the time to volunteer and coach, instead of blaming others and if not willing to commit, keep criticism to a minimum and find ways to support the team and existing coaching staff.

The good news is that, when parents follow these suggestions, players can withstand an occasional season of a bad coach. In conclusion, if parents want kids to have fun, improve, and not be bored or burnout, then they should do the things to make those happen and quit relying on others to do them for their kids. Coaches exist to teach the sport, hopefully with fun, but if fun was the only goal, they should throw parties and leave the sticks and balls at home; they would be considered the greatest coach ever, I guess.
